5 Signs Your Home Has a Hidden Plumbing Leak (And What to Do About It)

A burst pipe is hard to miss. But most plumbing leaks don’t announce themselves that dramatically. They hide inside walls, under floors, or behind fixtures, quietly doing damage for weeks or months before anyone notices. By the time visible damage appears, the cost of repairs has often climbed significantly.

Here are five signs your home might have a hidden plumbing leak, and what you should do if you spot them.

1. Your Water Bill Has Gone Up for No Clear Reason

If your water usage hasn’t changed but your bill has crept up over the past few months, a slow leak somewhere in your system is one of the most common causes. Even a small, steady drip can add up to hundreds of litres of wasted water over time.

2. You Can Hear Running Water When Nothing Is On

Turn off all your taps, appliances, and fixtures. If you still hear the sound of running or trickling water, especially near walls or under floors, it’s worth investigating. It could be a pipe that’s weeping inside your walls.

3. Damp Spots, Staining, or Soft Areas on Walls and Ceilings

Water stains, yellowish patches, or areas where drywall feels soft or spongy are red flags. These are signs that moisture has been accumulating over time, either from a leaking pipe or a slow drip from above. Mould or a musty smell in the area makes it even more urgent.

4. Low Water Pressure in One or More Fixtures

A drop in water pressure can have a few causes, but a leak in your water line is one of them. If the pressure seems fine at some taps but noticeably weaker at others, it could point to a break or corrosion in that branch of your plumbing.

5. Cracked, Warped, or Buckling Flooring

Hardwood, laminate, and tile can all show signs of prolonged moisture exposure. If your floors are buckling, warping, or developing gaps near walls or appliances, check for moisture underneath. Under-slab leaks are particularly tricky to detect without professional equipment.

What to Do If You Suspect a Leak

The first step is to check your water meter. Turn off all water in your home and watch the meter for 15 to 30 minutes. If it’s still moving, water is escaping somewhere in your system.

At that point, it’s best to call a licensed plumber who can use leak detection equipment to locate the source without unnecessary demolition. The sooner a leak is found, the less damage it causes.
